Recently I've been super into Devil May Cry (DMC). I have never played the games, and truthfully I don't have any interest in playing the games myself, but I am gushing about this game.

I am working my way through 'DMC the movie' on YouTube and reading the light novels. The 'movie' contains all the cinematic scenes from the games and it is strung togethere chronologically like a movie. As of today, I've seen DMC 3, DMC, and almost all of DMC 2.

Regardless of the way that the rest of the games unfold, I just want to say that I am elated that there is a protagonist, Dante, in a game who is super handsome, has a complex character, and is actually a GOOD GUY (did I not say that already!?). There are not many hot guys who are good guys in a cool af story nowadays. DMC is quite old, yes, but it is still relevant today, so I still feel like I am in the loop. I am sooo fangirling over Dante though, fr. He's a cool af human/demon who destroys demons in the coolest fashion ever. Like he fights like a bad ass because he is a badass. The athleticism, sword fighting techniques, and gunhandling is just so cool. Physically impossible, hence why it's cool lol.

Update Dec 10 Lol I thought that DMC 4 and 5 would be great. DMC 3 was where the story kicked off imo, so 4 and 5 would be good, too.

ahahahah weeeell, I watched the beginning of DMC 4 last night and looks like the church is the bad guy! LOL alright so, I cannot stand this JRPG trope. Every JRPG game I've attempted to play, though the list is not so extensive, has always had some kind of "church bad" take. And it's so annoying. Yes, institutions with power can become corrupt. You know what else can be corrupt? the government!

I don't have as many major gripes with the church being bad in DMC 4 as I traditionally would. I think this is because the church's head assasinated the original pope, then started secretly using demonic power to gain power. So the church didn't begin on the wrong foot. Something like Fire Emblem Three Houses bothers me more because the Church of Seiros was bad from the get-go.

So I read the synonpsis of DMC 4 instead, and it appears to me that Nero is the primary focus of the game. Nero is basically the new protag. Younger, basically not like Dante personality-wise lol. For that reason I don't want to watch the cinematics; DMC started with Dante, and when I hear the game I think of him and his character. I can be thickheaded and resistant to change, but it's difficult to change first impressions, especially since I hadn't had time to 'wait' between game releases. I had no time to sit and ponder and crave change.

I am not a fan of surprises, so I read the synopsis of DMC 5, too. From what I read, the story seems to be about Dante more, so I'll give that game a whirl.

Update Dec 12 I finished watching DMC 5 tonight! I thought it was pretty good, I loved basically every scene with Dante in it rofl.

The game is 7 years old, but a question looms in the (reddit) community: will Dante be back for another installment of the game, if Capcom decides to make one? This is a reasonable question since they introduced Nero, Dante's nephew, into the mix, likely to get the Gohan or Boruto treatment to continue the series: a descendant of a character is ready to take the torch. I feel like this is definitely likely for a few reasons.

First of all, though Nero was pushed aside by Dante 'cause he was 'dead weight,' I feel like he really came into his potential at the end of the game. He found his own Devil Trigger, and that merged with his side of humanity - his goal being not to let the twins Dante and Vergil kill each other 'cause they're family - was very moving and telling of a strong hero.

Then there's the fact that Dante and Vergil returned to the underworld and Vergil sealed the portal back to the human world so they cannot return. Dante and Vergil are seen sparring (omg this was suuuuper wholesome btw the bros are playing!!!) and Dante says 'We've got plenty of time [to settle the score].' Meaning that Dante is in the underworld for the long haul. BUT, right before they had left for the underworld - Vergil said to Nero, 'Next time I won't go easy' or something like that, but he definitely referred to a next time, probably to keep the idea open.

A (absolutely LOVELY) stroll through reddit and I learned that the Yamato (Vergil's signature katana) can open portals - after all, it's what closed the portal connecting the underworld to the demon world - so why can't it open another portal? Which could have a fun new plot idea, which is Vergil leaves Dante in the underworld to do whatever in the human world. I'm not sure how likely this is, though, because if Vergil seeks ultimate power and strength, I don't think he'll find it in the human world, but I'm not an expert on the worldbuilding in this series. I'd have to do more reading than watching because the cinematics tie into the gameplay, and I have not played the games.

Anywho, that's my take. My other opinions are, well, about racism. Like why the hell did they make Lady half asian, why does Trish and by extension Dante's mom like jewish, and why is the actual jew Nico Goldstein a hillbilly country bumpkin? Granted I loved all of them, especially Nico, idk, it was just like, weird. backtracking to Trish/Dante's mom Eva, sooo, there's some ideas that Dante was italian, and jews and italian can look similar sometimes, but damn they looked like my friend from elementary school LOLLL and she was blonde and jewish. At least we don't reaallllly know dante's ethnicity lol... don't break my damn immersion.
